It covers various city regions – Region A, B and C. A major portion of the region consists of residential areas. Lanseria Airport also falls within the region. This airport is used by domestic and international travellers, and therefore the region provides a first impression of South Africa to foreign visitors. There are also industrial and commercial areas in the region such as Manufacta, Roberville, Kya Sands and Strydom Park. These various land uses put different demands on the water and sewer systems. Uninterrupted water supply is critical and therefore the region strives to repair water bursts as soon as possible. The region also serves a number of informal settlements, which present different challenges, such as the supply of water via water tankers and sanitation by means of chemical toilets. According to regional manager, Gert Jacobs, one of the region’s key challenges is the ageing infrastructure, both water and sewer.
Thirty, forty years ago, asbestos pipes were the most cost-effective water pipe to install. These pipes have now reached the end of life and must be replaced. However, funds are not always available and therefore other interventions are required to minimise bursts. One of the interventions that the region is trying to reduce is the pressure in the system. This is a delicate balancing act. Pressure cannot be reduced to the point where some customers end up without water during peak demand periods. A challenge in the sewerage system is that as it ages, tree roots cause cracks in the pipes. These are only hairline cracks and would not cause sewer seepage from the system; instead it causes the tree roots to penetrate the sewer pipes and cause blockages. To mitigate this, the region is doing preventative maintenance by cutting out these roots prior to causing blockages. The region is at the forefront in enhancing and improving the SAP complaints management system. The region often requests enhancement to improve reporting and the management
of complaints.)
